The incident happened when four inmates shot their way out of the maximum security Laval Institute, Quebec. The incident left three other guards wounded and one prisoner dead. Wounded in in the incident were guard Marc Drouin, age 22, guard Richard Rolland, 28, and guard Gaston Langelier, 48, the prison's deputy director of security. Drouin was reported to be in serious condition in hospital, while the others were in satisfactory condition. This was the bloodiest escape in the history of Laval , the site of dozens of breakouts, riots and protests since it was opened in 1873 under the name St. Vincent de Paul Penitentiary.
The five prisoners were being escorted across the courtyard and when they reached the administration building, two or three of the five pulled out pistols. Others were armed with makeshift weapons. Prison officials said "We don't know how the firearms were smuggled in." Guard Rolland was ordered to open the electronic doors, when he refused he was shot.
