Constable Patterson observed a vehicle being driven dangerously. He gave chase and the vehicle sped away. The driver of the vehicle abandoned the vehicle just over a big hill on the roadway. Constable Patterson in pursuit swerved to avoid the abandoned vehicle. His cruiser left the road rolled over and came to rest on its roof.
The York Regional Police came upon the scene and found Constable Patterson unconscious. Constable Patterson later died of his injuries.
An investigation discovered that the joyrider was driving the car without permission and later reported the vehicle stolen. He was charged and convicted of negligence causing death and failing to remain at the scene of an accident.
Constable Patterson was a fourth generation Police Officer. He was with the OPP for 17 months.
Constable Patterson survived by his wife.
