He was stationed at the nearby Simcoe Detachment. He was targeted by an individual who he had previously arrested. On the evening of January 23, 1980 he received a call from the suspect saying he had some information on drug related activity. A meeting was set for that evening. Constable McAleese gave his notes and some instruction. By 11:20PM the informant failed to show. As he was leaving the appointed location the suspect arrived in a truck.
When Constable McAleese approached the truck, the suspect opened fire and shot Constable McAleese 9 times. He then drove over him dragging him about 25 feet. Constable McAleese received help at the scene but later died of his injuries. The suspect was able to evade capture for about 4 hours. The suspect crashed his truck into a hydro pole and was captured. He was charged with first degree murder.
He was found not guilty by reason of insanity and incarcerated in a mental facility. He was some time later deemed cured and released back into the public.
Constable McAleese was survived by his wife and three children.
Constable McAleese was with the OPP for 9 years.
