Constable Smith was stationed at North Bay at the time of his death. He was working radar patrol and had clocked a vehicle travelling at an excessive speed in the opposite direction. As he made a U-turn on the highway he was blinded by the sun and his cruiser was struck by a large truck.

Constable Smith was with the OPP for almost 18 years.

Constable Smith survived by his wife and three children.
