Constable Miller was gunned down as he and a fellow officer were having coffee at a highway service station. A young man burst into the coffee shop at about 2:50 a.m. and opened fire with a 12 gauge shotgun. The gunman was disarmed by Constable Miller's partner and other customers. Two suspects in their 20's who were known to the police were in custody charged with the murder. There was no known motive for the killing.
The suspect who drove the vehicle was determined to have been forced to drive the vehicle and found not guilty. The shooter was found guilty and sentenced to life imprisonment.
Constable Miller was a 16 year veteran of the force.
He is survived by his wife and three children.
