Constable McLaughlin was stationed in Spanish, Ontario at the time of his death. In the early morning hours Constable McLaughlin was on patrol. He signaled to pull over to the shoulder of the road, but for some unknown reason steered the vehicle into the path of a large truck that had been behind him. He was killed instantly by the impact.

Constable McLaughlin was with the OPP for 7 years.

Constable McLaughlin survived by his wife and two children.
