Corporal Flanagan died while in Thailand on an undercover drug buy and bust operation. While in the back of a truck, one of the suspects became suspicious and began to drive. The suspect in the back of the truck with Corporal Flanagan tried to take back the heroin.

A struggle ensued and Corporal Flanagan was thrown from the moving vehicle. He sustained severe head and spinal injuries and died in a hospital in the city of Chang Mai.
