Chief Main was attacked by 3 men while investigating a theft from a farm. He was buried in a shallow grave with his dog. He was found by his long time friend Detective Willie of the Vancouver Police Department. Detective Willie volunteered to search for his friend when he failed to return.

One of the murderers died of TB in the Common Jail at New Westminster. A second was released in turn for crown evidence. The third met his fate at the hands of Arthur Ellis and Sheriff Armstrong. The accused plead guilty to first degree murder.

The Sheriff sent for Mr. Ellis (the official hangman) Mr. Ellis tried but was unable to open the trap door to the gallows. Sheriff Armstrong tried and the door opened. This was the only time in B.C. History that a Sheriff had performed the actual execution.
