On February 8, 1938 he was working in an area known as Orchard Beach. There were several cottages in the area that had been robbed.
Constable Shervill had encountered an individual in the darkness. He challenged the man who then fired upon him with a .32 caliber revolver and then fled.
Constable Shervill was able to get to his vehicle and out to the highway and summons help. He was taken to the hospital where he later died from the bullet wound.
Constable Shervill was in law enforcement for 26 years.
Constable Shervill was survived by his wife and daughter.
