Constable Amey was stationed in Whitbourne, Newfoundland, at the time of the incident. Constable Amey was shot and killed while attempting to capture four escapees from Her Majesty's Penitentiary. Constable Amey and Constable Keith located the escapees in a stolen car.

During the process Constable Amey went back to the patrol car to call for back-up. While he was gone the inmates managed to jump Constable Keith and one of them took his revolver. When Constable Amey returned to the scene, he was shot and killed instantly.

The gunman who killed Constable Amey entered a store and took the storekeeper hostage. Constable Keith persuaded the man to give himself up. The four escapees eventually surrendered and were returned to custody.

Constable Amey had served with the agency for 2 years.
