Special Constable Robert Thomas was shot dead during a routine car check in Powerview, Manitoba. His partner was wounded. Both officers were shot with a .303 rifle.

The suspect was charged with first degree murder, attempted murder and two counts of forcible confinement stemming from a hostage taking on the nearby Fort Alexander Reserve.
