They chased the suspect out onto sea ice. When the lead officer got within ten feet of the suspect he saw that he had a stolen RCMP 30-30 Rifle. The lead officer turned to Constable Lelliott to warn him about the gun. At that moment the suspect turned and fired wildly from the hip. The bullet hit Constable Lelliott, mortally wounding him.
The suspect was given 5 years for manslaughter.
