Guard Traill was watching over the two inmates who were stoking the fires of the old lime kilns on what is now the west campus of Queen's University. The guard was alone with two convicts who reportedly liked and respected him, but they had picked this day to escape and their affection for Guard Traill didn't delay their plans.
One inmate distracted the guard by showing him a small ornament he had crafted while the other inmate snuck up behind him with a heavy ironwood sleigh stake and smashed him in the head. They tied up the unconscious guard and made their escape. After an eleven day manhunt, they were captured and convicted. One was hung for Guard Traill's murder and the other had ten years added to his sentence.
Guard Traill had been employed at Kingston Penitentiary, Ontario, for one year. He was survived by his wife, two sons, and a daughter.
