In a continuing rebellion by the natives which began in Duck Lake, NWT and continued to Frog Lake and Fort Pitt had now reached Cut Knife Hill. Corporal Sleigh was shot through the mouth while defending the fort from attack.
Corporal Talbot Lowry and Constable Patrick Burke were also mortally wounded and died the following day.
