The suspect a 37 year old immigrant from Liverpool, was later arrested and charged with the murder of the two officers. He was convicted and sentenced to be hanged.
The execution in the courtyard of the old Montreal Jail on November 10, 1910 was the last public hanging in the city.
Constable O'Connell was survived by his wife and six children.
