Constable Baril was shot while in pursuit of 2 men involved in a vehicle accident.

At the time of the accident Constable Baril had been following the suspects vehicle. It was believed to be a stolen vehicle. Constable Baril cornered one of the two men on a second floor balcony of an apartment building in a residential area.

Officer Baril was attempting to arrest the suspect as he ran up the balcony. Officer Baril lost his footing and fell down the stairs. The suspect turned and fired on him. He was shot in the head and died instantly.

Constable Baril was a 22 year veteran of the Montreal Police Force.
