Constable Rhodes was stationed at Rae, Northwest Territories at the time of his death.

It is believed that he was attempting to use fuel to ignite a fire in a stove. It appeared that hot coals from a previous fire ignited the fuel being poured into the stove causing the explosion.

Constable Rhodes died from severe burns.
