Inspector Sampson and his troop were on standby to assist with expected trouble that developed out of the Great Depression of that time period. Inspector Sampson and his troop were called in to assist the Saskatoon Police.
A riot broke out and Inspector Sampson and his troop were summoned to assist. Inspector Sampson's horse was struck with an object which caused the horse to lurch suddenly. The sudden action caused Inspector Sampson to lose his balance and he struck his head with great force. He was taken to hospital but died from the injury.
Several men were arrested and one was charged with manslaughter. He was later acquitted.
