Inspector David McCombe died of exposure in a severe blizzard. He was the Commanding Officer of the North Battleford Saskatchewan Detachment.

While on routine patrol his car became stuck because of severe blizzard conditions. He had attempted to reach his destination on foot only to be driven back by the violent weather. He returned to his vehicle and discovered he had lost his keys. He forced his way back into the vehicle but was unable to get the car to start. It took several search attempts to finally reach the Inspector's position. He was found frozen to death inside the vehicle.
