Sergeant Barker was posted to Shaunavon, Saskatchewan at the time of his death. He was shot to death by an insane man in the Grand Hotel in Shaunavon, Saskatchewan. Sergeant Barker knew his attacker and had spent time talking with him prior to the shooting. His killer was found not guilty by reason of insanity and confined to an institution.
