Constable John Johnson died from injuries he received when he fell of the back of a police vehicle that was returning to the scene of a street fight where he and a fellow officer arrested 2 men on drunkenness charges.

His death came 10 days after he was taken to hospital with the injuries. A coroner's jury assembled to investigate the incident found that the vehicle was not equipped with proper handles for riding on the rear of the vehicle.

Constable Johnson had been a police officer for 44 years and he was one of the oldest active police officers in the Province of Nova Scotia.
