Corporal Herbert Smart of Divisional Headquarters in Toronto, drowned along with 4 fellow officers who also drowned when their vessel sank in Lake Simcoe, Ontario.

Constable Maurice Melnychuk and Constable George Ransom also from Divisional Headquarters in Toronto. Constable Glen Farough and Constable David Perry from the nearby detachment of Orillia.

It is known that there was a severe electrical storm in the area that caused several boating related fatalities that weekend.

Their boat was a 14 foot RCMP outboard with a 35 horsepower engine.
