Staff Sergeant Rothwell had extensive experience as a bush pilot and had been flying RCMP aircraft for 12 years. He was the senior pilot of the RCMP Air Division.
Also killed in the crash were air engineer Special Constable Joseph Cormier of the Vancouver Detachment and Constable Richard Green of the Penticton Detachment.
Constable Green was picked up to assist in the search for a suspected murderer who disappeared into the bush after the suspect shot an RCMP Corporal investigating the murder of a woman.
Constable Green had special knowledge of the terrain in the search area.
