Guard John Sangster died from injuries he sustained when he was clubbed violently with a potato masher as he attempted to block a jail break. He was taken to hospital but never regained consciousness. The assistant guard Eddie Beard had ordered the prisoners to their cells. Assistant Guard Eddie Beard was brother of Constable Richard Beard killed in the line of Duty in Ontario, August 27, 1921.

Guard Beard was also assaulted with the same weapon which left him badly bruised about the head and his left eye blackened. He was able to convince the suspect that escape would be impossible. He was also able to get the prisoner to return keys which had been taken from Guard Sangster and also obtain another key from another inmate who were then locked in their cells.

A seventeen year old male was charged with the murder and assault.

Guard Sangster had been a guard for 6 years.

Guard Sangster is survived by his wife and five children.
