Constable Slater was killed by a gunshot blast to the head as he responded to a call for help from fellow officer Constable Gordon McCourt, who was shot in the shoulder by a gunman. The incident happened in the Canadian Pacific Railway Station parking lot in North Bay. Constable McCourt was in hospital in satisfactory condition following the incident. The gunman was also in hospital with a bullet wound to the neck.

The gunman was charged with 1 count of Capital Murder and 3 counts of attempted murder. He was convicted of non-capitol murder and sentenced to life imprisonment. There was no indication of any bystanders present at the time of the incident.

Constable Slater was on the North Bay Police Force for 5 years after serving with the Ontario Provincial Police in Port Credit for 4 years.

Constable Slater is survived by a wife and three children.
