Constable Piukkala was stabbed to death as he answered a call of a break-in at a Mississauga apartment. It appeared that it was a murder-suicide. The tenant, 28 year old male who was recently separated was found two meters away with a single bullet wound to the head. It is not clear who fired the shot. It is believed that the suspect took his own life after stabbing Constable Piukkala three or four times in the upper torso.

Constable Piukkala was survived by his wife.
