This resulted in further crimes and the murder of a second police officer in Woodstock, Ontario. Constable Jack Ross was killed and another officer wounded in a tense 19 hour stand off with police.
The suspect faced charges in Montreal, one count of first degree murder in the death of Constable Pierre Beaulieu, one count of second degree murder in the death of a civilian, three charges of attempted murder, four of armed robbery, one charge of kidnapping, and two charges of vehicle theft. He also faced a charge of first degree murder for Constable Ross and attempted murder and wounding of a second officer before he gave himself up to police. He was convicted and sentenced to two life terms. Two years later he committed suicide while in prison.
Both of the murdered officers were wearing body armor but the bullets struck unprotected areas on their bodies.
