He was investigating a report of a suspicious stranger. He had approached the stranger and without any warning the stranger drew a .45 caliber revolver and shot Constable Dent.
A call went out and a fellow officer arrived on the scene and gave chase. The suspect was located and refused to surrender. A warning was given and a shot was fired killing the suspect. The suspect was identified as a break-and-enter artist.
Constable Dent had just under 10 years service with the OPP.
Constable Dent survived by his wife and 6 week old son.
