Deputy Sheriff James Cole Askew, died during a training exercise on the job. He was involved in a Defensive Tactics Training Program. During the training he went down but his head missed the mats. As a result he suffered a fatal head injury. At the time of his death he was posted to the Kamloops Courthouse.

He is the first member of the BC Sheriff’s Service to die on duty.
