Constable McKay was driving along a busy highway on the evening of July 23, 1973 when he was involved in a collision with a broken down van on the highway.
Constable McKay was unable to return to work until late in the summer after suffering head trauma from the accident. On November 23, 1973 he was forced back into hospital where it was discovered that he had developed a brain aneurysm. The exact location of the aneurysm could not be located and he died on December 20, 1973 when the aneurysm ruptured.
Constable McKay was with the OPP for 2 years. He was survived by his wife and 2 sons, one born after he died.
