Constable Jurgen Seewald was stationed at Cape Dorset, Nunavut at the time of his death. Constable Seewald was responding to a domestic dispute at the time of the incident. Constable Seewald was alone when he responded to a call at a residence. There was an altercation with a male suspect and as a result a weapon was discharged fatally wounding Constable Seewald.

Another officer was called to the scene and took Constable Seewald to the local nursing station where he died from his wounds a short time later.

The suspect as was sentenced to a life term in prison with no possibility of parole for 25 years.

Constable Seewald had 26 years service with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
