Constable Hyland suffered a fatal heart attack while involved in a foot pursuit of two robbery suspects. During the chase he began to feel ill. His two partners observed him leaning against a wall. They rushed him to a hospital where he died approximately 3 hours later.

Constable Hyland had served with the agency for 14 years. He was survived by his wife, five children, and one grandchild.
