Fish and Wildlife Officer III Ronald Black was supervising a winter commercial net fishery at Peerless Lake, Alberta. This lake is approximately 360 miles north of Edmonton, Alberta. Temperatures were in the -30 F. range.

Officer Black was attempting to load a bombardier ski machine onto a trailer when he collapsed. Two hours of CPR failed to revive him. It is believed the elements were a strong factor in his death. The nearest medical aid was 180 miles away.

Officer Black had been with the Alberta Fish and Wildlife Division for 13 years.

At the time of his death Officer Black was survived by his wife and 3 children.
