Corporal Shaughnessy was stationed at Port Colborne detachment at the time of his death.

Corporal Shaughnessy was on patrol driving along Forks Rd. in Wainfleet Township about 10 miles from Welland. Corporal Shaughnessy was negotiating a curve in the road, when his vehicle left the roadway, became airborne and flipped over onto its roof.

Corporal Shaugnessy died of his injuries shortly after arriving at Welland Hospital.

Corporal Shaugnessy is survived by his wife and five children.
