Constable Rathonyi was conducting a fitness appraisal to become a member of the Emergency Task Force Unit. After finishing the test, he collapsed. Other officers tried to give him first aid but was unsuccessful.

Constable Rathonyi was assigned to Uniform Patrol duties on "B" platoon in Niagara Falls. He began his career with the Niagara Regional Police Service in 2000

Constable Rathonyi is survived by his wife and two sons.
