At about 1:00 AM He had been called to the scene of a shots fired complaint about 5 miles from his home. He arrived on the scene where a 26 year old aboriginal man had shot a newly married couple and his own father with a hunting rifle.
As Constable Fulford reached the scene with a guide, a shot rang out killing his guide. Before Constable Fulford could withdraw his revolver he took a shot to the shoulder. He attempted to take cover, but the killer caught up with him took his revolver and shot him in the head.
Officers arrived from the Red Lake detachment and apprehended the killer with the aid of tear gas. The killer was found guilty and was the last person to be hanged in the Kenora jail.
It was reported that the killer went berserk when he learned that a girl he liked recently married.
Constable Fulford was with the OPP for 45 months.
Constable Fulford is survived by his wife and three children.
