Constable Eric Czapnik was ambushed and stabbed to death
while sitting in his patrol car outside of the Ottawa Hospital Civic
Campus at 4:30 am. He was writing reports when he was
targeted and attacked.

The man who attacked him was a former constable with the
Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Two paramedics and several
civilians subdued the suspect until responding officers took him
into custody.

In March 2012 the subject was convicted of Constable Czapnik's
murder and sentenced to life in prison.

Constable Czapnik had served with the agency for two years. He
is survived by his wife, daughter, and three sons.
