Constable Eric Czapnik was ambushed and stabbed to death while sitting in his patrol car outside of the Ottawa Hospital Civic Campus at 4:30 am. He was writing reports when he was targeted and attacked.

The suspect who attacked him was formerly a constable with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Two paramedics and several civilians subdued the suspect until responding officers took him into custody.

Constable Czapnik had served with the agency for two years. He is survived by his wife, daughter, and three sons.
