Both officers were among 82 other Canadian police officers who were assigned to the RCMP's International Peace Operations Branch and had been deployed to Haiti to help train local law enforcement officers.
When the earthquake struck, the buildings that Sergeant Gallagher and Superintendent Coates were in collapsed, killing them.
The earthquake killed an estimated 150,000 people.
Superintendent Coates is survived by his wife and three children.
