Guard Joseph Purcell succumbed to injuries sustained almost one
month earlier while supervising a work crew at the Kingston
Penitentiary in Ontario.

He and an inmate were operating team of workhorses that were
pulling a binder, when the reins broke free. Guard Purcell jumped
off of the binder to fix the reins, but the horses bolted and he was
run over.
