Senior Constable Gula was stationed at Niagara Falls at the time of his death. Senior Constable Gula was killed when he was carrying out a vehicle check at the roadside when his patrol vehicle was sideswiped by a pickup truck. He was struck by the vehicle and killed. The truck failed to stop after the collision. The driver later turned himself into police.

Senior Constable Gula was 4 months from retirement. He had served 29 years with the OPP.
